Clean Sweep.
That’s what Matt Kenseth, Mark Martin, Kyle Busch and Ryan Newman provided this weekend as
EMP Stewart Components cooled vehicles won every honor available during the NASCAR tripleheader at Bristol (TN) Motor Speedway.
Kenseth was the king of the hill winning both the Sharpie 500 Nextel Cup race Saturday and the Food City 500 Friday. Martin grabbed both the win and the pole position for Wednesday’s NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race. Throw in Kurt Busch and Jeff Burton taking the two front-row spots in the Cup race and Newman’s top qualifying effort in the Busch Series event, and you have a total whitewash of the NASCAR weekend.
“That’s pretty amazing,” said Jeff Canull, EMP Stewart Components general manager. “It’s a great accomplishment for any company to have their product on a winning NASCAR racer, but to have three wins and three poles in as many races – and to do it at Bristol – is really something for our company.”
Kenseth capped the big Bristol weekend by winning the Sharpie 500 Cup event Saturday evening in front of a crowd estimated at 160,000. The Cambridge, WI driver – along with the rest of the field - appeared to be destined to finish behind Burton’s EMP Stewart Components GM Pro Series Water Pump cooled Chevy after the Richard Childress Racing driver led 263 laps in the 500-lap contest.
Kenseth first took over the top spot on Lap 54 and would eventually lead four times for 117 laps this time around.
Keeping his Roush Racing Ford near or at the front for most of the race, Kenseth - who won this race last year - powered his way into the lead for the final time on Lap 450 and never looked back in scoring his fourth NASCAR Nextel Cup win of the season and his second in a row after capturing the race at Michigan one week ago.
Kyle Busch finished second followed by Dale Earnhardt, Jr., Scott Riggs, Jeff Gordon, Denny Hamlin, Ryan Newman, Burton and Jimmie Johnson.
Kenseth’s victory was his 14th career Cup triumph and his 64th Top-5 finish in 244 career starts. In winning the past two Cup events, Kenseth has cut Johnson’s lead in the Nextel Cup point standings from 124 to just seven markers over the past two weeks.. Both Johnson (3,499) and Kenseth (3,492) also clinched spots in the 10-race Chase format with their performances Saturday night.
"Things can turn on you in a big hurry," Kenseth said. "You can be on top of the world today and tomorrow be battling your guts out for 25th. Our goal is nothing short of winning a second championship. Anything less than that would be a little bit of a disappointment for all of us."
The battle for the remaining eight spots in the Chase are in serious question as less than 50 points separates fourth from 10th in the standings. Kevin Harvick is currently third with 3,178 points followed by Kyle Busch with 3,097. From there, it gets pretty crowded as Gordon (3,091), Hamlin (3,070), Burton (3,064), Tony Stewart (3,056), Earnhardt, Jr. (3.051) and Mark Martin (3,049) complete the Top-10 after Bristol.
Kasey Kahne is the final driver with a chance to make the Chase lurking outside the Top-10 with 2,959 markers.
There are just two races remaining before the field for the 2006 NASCAR Chase for the Championship will be set – this coming weekend at California Speedway and Richmond International Raceway on Saturday, September 9.
This Sunday’s race from California will be televised live on NBC (time to be determined). MRN and XM Satellite Radio will also carry the event live.
Kenseth also got the best of the competition in Friday’s Food City 250 driving his EMP Stewart Components Ford Pro Series Water Pump cooled Fusion to a win over Kevin Harvick, Ron Hornaday, Jr., Kasey Kahne and Jason Leffler.
Kenseth (right) was again the class of the field, but a pit road speeding penalty put him at the tail end of the field on a Lap 99 restart. Kenseth then battled his way back to the front passing Harvick - who along with Hornaday, Jr., gave EMP Stewart Components a 1-2-3 finish in the event - on the outside with just 15 laps remaining in the 250-circuit contest.
Kenseth’s win – his 19th in NBS competition – came in a race that was slowed 14 times for cautions totaling 85 of the 250 laps.
The Busch Series will also be heading to California this weekend for a Saturday evening event. Televised by NBC, the race will take the green flag Friday at 9 p.m. Eastern Time. MRN and XM Satellite Radio will again have the radio coverage.
Mark Martin completed the EMP Stewart Components Bristol weekend sweep with a win in the O’Reilly 200 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series event Wednesday evening.
Martin’s Roush Racing Ford F-150 (left) – along with the Toyota of Mike Skinner – were the only two trucks to lead the 200-lap test on the .533-mile Bristol oval with Martin taking the victory in front of Todd Bodine, Ted Musgrave, Johnny Benson, Jr., and David Starr.
Martin led 164 laps in scoring his fourth win in just eight NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series starts this season. The victory also gave Martin the distinction of being the only driver to win a Cup, Busch and Truck race at Bristol Motor Speedway.
The Truck Series will take an extended vacation returning to the track on Saturday, September 16 at New Hampshire International Speedway. The SPEED Channel will televise the race from NHIS beginning at 2 p.m. Eastern Time. MRN and XM Satellite Radio will have the live radio coverage.
While Kenseth, Martin and the rest were bringing racing glory to the EMP Stewart Components name at the NASCAR level, Tracy Gienger was doing the same at the grass-roots level winning the International Motor Contest of America stock car division main event and season championship at Marshalltown (IA) Speedway Friday evening.
Gienger (right) started 11th in the main event and got an early break passing several cars that were involved in an accident just after the start of the race. By Lap 4, Gienger had pushed his 1987 Buick Regal stock car – cooled by an EMP Stewart Components Stage 3 Water Pump – to the fourth position and was looking for more.
Just two laps later, Gienger powered into the lead and never looked back racing his way to his third main event win of the season and his first-ever IMCA stock car season championship.
“I found out in Victory Lane that the win was even sweeter because we had wrapped up the 2006 Marshalltown stock car track points title,” said Gienger. “It was just an incredible night.”
The final IMCA regular-season event of the 2006 Marshalltown schedule will roll off this Friday, September 1, at 7 p.m. Central Time.
Mike Gardner, fresh off an overall championship in the Wisconsin Red, White and Blue Series, had to park his EMP Stewart Components cooled Ford Super Late Model pavement racer this weekend because of wet weather.
On Thursday, the regularly scheduled racing program at Wisconsin International Raceway in Kaukauna was washed out and Saturday’s Round III of the Auto Value Series at Norway (MI) Speedway also met the same fate.
Gardner will return to WIR action this Thursday, August 31, at 7 p.m. Central Time while the Auto Value event at Norway has been reschedule for Saturday, September 2 at 7 p.m. Eastern Time.
EMP Stewart Components racers Max Angelelli and Jan Magnussen kept their hopes of a Rolex Sports Car Series Daytona Prototype manufacturer’s championship alive with a fourth-place finish in Saturday’s event at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, CA.
Angelelli and Magnussen’s EMP Stewart Components GM Pro Series Water Pump cooled Pontiac Riley Daytona Prototype (left) won the pole and led a race-high 60 laps on the twisting Infineon road course before giving way to eventual race winners Scott Pruett and Luis Diaz.
Butch Leitzinger and Andy Wallace finished second in a Pontiac Riley while Adrian Fernandez and Mario Haberfeld finished third in front of Angelelli and Magnussen – their No. 10 SunTrust Pontiac Riley finishing in the Top-4 for the ninth-straight event.
Ryan Dalziel and Alex Figge rounded out the top-five finishers in Saturday’s event.
Angelelli and Magnussen will try to give EMP Stewart Components the Grand American Road Racing Series Daytona Prototype manufacturer’s title in the final race of the season at Miller Motorsports Park in Tooele, Utah this weekend. The event will be televised on The SPEED Channel on Saturday, September 2 at 2 p.m. Eastern Time.
The biggest drag racing event of the season – the U.S. Nationals at O’Reilly Raceway Park in Clermont, IN, is also on the Labor Day weekend schedule.
Set for Wednesday-Monday, the event will feature competition in several divisions including Top Fuel, Funny Car, Pro Stock and Pro Motorcycle classes as well as a host of other pro and sportsman categories. Final round Pro division action will be televised on ESPN2 beginning Sunday at noon Eastern Time and again at 4 p.m. Eastern.
Another premiere event – the Championship Off Road Racing (CORR) World Championships will take center stage at Crandon, WI this weekend.
EMP Stewart Components racer Scott Beauchamp (right) will be looking to take the event and season championships in the Stock Truck division when the green flag falls on the action this weekend on Saturday, September 2 at 9 a.m. Central Time.
The Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) will also be in action over the Labor Day Holiday weekend competing at Mosport International Raceway Friday-Sunday, September 1-3.
